An Introduction to Phonics

When substitute teaching, the guest teacher is often required to do a Language Arts lesson or task based on phonics. The following is some basic information to help you in those lessons.

  • The English Alphabet Code 'Key' : 44 phonemes with their common 'sound pattern' representations:
  • Vowels (19):
    /a/ mat
    /ae/ ape, baby, rain, tray, they, eight
    /air/ square, bear
    /ar/ jar, fast
    /e/ peg, bread
    /ee/ sweet, me, beach, key, pony
    /i/ pig, wanted

Test 5 is on Consonant Sounds. Note: c and g have two sounds.

Test 8 is on the Short Vowel sounds.

Test 9 is on the Long Vowel sounds.

Tests 6, 7, 11, and 12 provide information and practice on
